Border ideas
« on: February 04, 2017, 11:41:02 AM »
Thanks to the 52 week challenge I finished making the blocks for my 100% Fossil Fern quilt. I want to add 6 to 9 inches all the way around. What would be a good border? I am leaning toward black and white checks, but I want other ideas. I am also looking for a name for the top.

Black & white checks would be really nice, with a random checks here & there of some of the colors from the blocks.

What about a row of piano keys alternating in all the colors used?  Or blocks of the colors used, here's one that I did.

Or you could do a bunch of blocks and make a 3 row border that looks like it weaves itself around the quilt.

What about continuing the chains into a white border, then choose one of the fossil ferns to make a small border all the way around. (If it were me I'd use blue just because I looove blue.)
PS I love how ya used some of the 52 week blocks in it. I can see several of 'em!

I would first put a thin border of the light beige around to float the top. Then I'd use the ribbon pattern you have in one of the blocks (possibly in a slightly darker color combo to really frame the top).

I'd include a thin border of black to follow through with the black you already have.

Such good ideas here! I especially like the idea of continuing the chains. I am using tan for the backing and I think I have enough to use in the border as well.

If you go with solid border then use your block background fabric, doing so would give your quilter some place to do some fancy border designs

I would do a wide black border so that your blocks look like they are floating. You could either applique a vine with leaves and flowers with fabric from the blocks or leave the space for fancy quilting?!

Yes, I am beginning to think a ribbon would be a bit busy. The quilt is already pretty busy with every color in it.

The ribbon idea got me thinking of another much simpler pieced border.  Done with trapezoid shapes and triangles alternating.  On this quilt I think it would be lovely with black trapezoids on cream.  Or vice versa.

SID the black Squares with a continuous curve design in each.  and something real fancy in each block. border depends on what you decide to do with it. The one on face book looks great but can become busy, but will highlight your quilt if you keep the black in the border designs.

I'm thinking making only the outside triangles scrappy. Light background in inner triangles.
