Alternative forum recommendations?
« on: February 08, 2017, 05:02:12 PM »
Are any of you on other quilting forums?  If so, which would you recommend and can you please give a little description (ie. small vs. large community, etc).

I'm still on the QB but almost never go there - maybe once or twice a year, and I don't last there for more than a few minutes.  It's so large and topics get buried very quickly and I'd prefer something smaller and more personal, like the Haven has been.  It's one of the things I've appreciated most about this forum.  Our wonderful admin has provided such a sweet community for us and I'm so grateful for all she's done despite her hardships.  I'll miss this place a lot!

Probably a good majority of us got our hands slapped on QB.  Very petty, controlling moderator on that board.

I wonder (brainstorming here) about maybe setting up a private group on facebook?  Thoughts?
Not sure how we'd separate the topics etc...

Leota - a private closed group, called Quilting Haven, has been set up on Facebook.
There's a FB group that is not public. No one can see your posts nor your information. Please join so we can keep in contact.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1875423919336567/

sew cornie I don't know of any other quilting groups, but if I learn of any I would gladly let you know.  I think that it is also being looked into as to what it would take to set up a new forum.  If you would like, PM me your email address (by tomorrow) & I will keep you posted on any developments.

I've never been booted off but after April started the Haven, I quit going there with any regularity.  I've been here since day 2.  The QB is too big, too impersonal, and like you and Spaghetti8888 have pointed out, overall admins are quite controlling.  I'll certainly not be jumping back to it at all in the future but also haven't seen any need to ask them to close my membership, if they even do that kind of thing by request.  Out of curiosity today, I checked in there and someone had started a thread to say the Haven is closing down.  I was pleasantly surprised to see the thread there as I would have assumed any such thread would have been axed by the mods.

I wasn't booted but I got a nasty email because I had use the acronym PITA in describing a quilting process. I was told that the QB was a family-oriented entity and if I offend again I would be banned.
1. There was no relevance to the timing of the event.
2. There was no link to the offending post.
3. Some pathetic bitty must have turned me in. Probably retaliation for Kill Sue.
4. Friendly? Some of the members are super nice. Admin? Not so much.
5. I don't go there for the social interaction.

That's pretty funny.  I had to think about it for a moment what PITA stands for.  Lol.

I am looking at a private forum that's used by my LA group. I don't know all of the particulars just yet so FB worked in a hurry. I would miss the Haven so much if it were totally gone.

The privacy settings are such that only members can see posts and approval is required so that spammers (or worse) aren't accepted.

facebook won't be quite like the haven but when someone posts a comment or picture all other comments made in response to it will stay with it.  Out 52 week challenge group has our own Facebook group called 52x2 Quilters.  So that all our pics and block choices etc will be together in one place.  Other swaps and such could do the same.  Creating a group is really quite easy.  I like visiting Quiltvilles open studio on Facebook.  And there are other groups on Facebook for quilting and sewing.  I still have always liked the Haven the best.

I think seversl of us got a note fof the pita acronym. Which, of course, got me to thinking of other things tbat pita could stand for - i did use Problem In The Area for a while.

My reaction to that  was what the - - - -?

I too have actually never been booted out, but do go there most days just to scan the new topics and mostly to look at pictures  of quilts. The pettiness of their judgements really is aggravating, so it never felt like home anymore once they were re-sponsored.  The Haven has been "home" ever since I first dropped in to see what it was like.  I am not a big lover of FB, but it is what it is and I am grateful that we do have a place to rest our heads until we get the Haven back.  Our heads or our threads.

I don't have an idea about which forum software to use. If you want to select one I am happy to pitch in to pay for it. FB is not ideal, but keeps a good many of us together. Folks I haven't seen in years turned up there.

There is a temporary forum that will be available after a couple more tests are run. I'll post the url then. It will keep us together until April has the full Haven back up and running.

Here you are... I am going out for a bit so approval might not be for a couple of hours or so.

Please use your Haven name when you get to that part of registration.
