2017 challenge
« on: December 21, 2016, 10:37:40 AM »
I saw a project on FB that I've decided to join. I'll try to go back and find the link to share. This is for those who thinks they might like to dabble with hand embroidery. Basics are to take a piece of fabric in a wooden hoop and add one stitch in the hoop each day of the year. Sounds interesting to me and it will. E interesting to see what we end up with. The author of the site said she is going to use a 12 inch hoop. Me? Not sure.  I may tend to go a little smaller. Off to find the link. Hope someone decides to join me. We could post pictures of our progreshetes the link:

1 YEAR OF STITCHES, EMBROIDERY
A “One Year of Stitches” Project as Seen Through One Embroiderer’s Hoop
1 Year of Stitches project by Michelle Anais Beaulieu-MorganSave

Last week, I presented a challenge for 2017, and I’m hoping you’ll join me! The project is called 1 Year of Stitches, and it’s a 365-day project in which you fill a hoop (or two) with a crazy amount of colors, patterns, and stitches. 1 Year of Stitches is the brainchild of Hannah Claire Somerville, who has invited anyone interested to join in this impressive endeavor. Inspired by her work, Michelle Anais Beaulieu-Morgan embarked on this craft journey in mid-2016. Now, she’s about halfway through (you can start at any time of the year).

Here’s a smattering of the stitches she’s created since beginning—and she’s in the midst of starting a second hoop! The first one features a variety of colors and feature a variety of subjects woven together through abstract patterns. Look closely and you’ll see flowers, vessel, and even a strange hand. I love this!

I was trying to post the pictures. Go to the link and check it out.

I love this concept  but I just can't  do the way she has. I need controlled  chaos. If I figure a way to do that I may join.  Okay ladies who were teens in the 60s, remember  windowpane  check?  If I had a linen blend of that, could do a pane a day? Hmmm.

Think I will try this! I'm stalled in the middle of a Kathy Shaw class and maybe this will get me moving. Not really good with free-form projects so maybe it will be good for me... Thanks for finding this.

great minds think alike.  I like some control over my chaos too.  This could be fun if I let it challenge  me to do a stitch a day on the crazy quilt I have already started but not worked on in a long time.  I will get busy in January making more base blocks and try to do a seam treatment a day.  How's that sound?

The only way I could do one stitch a day would be to have a pattern. Obviously not what Brown Paper Bag intends - that I could not do.

Love reading all of the replies!
*CheatMW maybe you could make your own grid and fill. I'm not sure what I'll do. I'm better with organized chaos myself!  At least this isn't a huge investment in time or $. One stitch a day sounds to be the big challenge. Glad for the company!
*Shyleigh I'm thinking of doing a few stitches in different areas of the circle and gradually filling in. Who knows that may change but it sounds like fun. Happy you're willing to play along. Maybe we could post pictures often.
*Denise. Great time to bring those gorgeous blocks out and Add some more embroidery.
*  glassquilt hoping you'll stretch your wings and jump in
* Stewie...LSD .....hum...hope that's not what it takes!  Lol

I used to do embroidery, counted cross stitch and needlepoint.  I made a redwork runner for a friend for Christmas.  It wasn't so much the embroidery I didn't enjoy but working with floss I hated.  Also just finished a miniature appliqued quilt with some simple embroidery.  Again, found myself cussing over the floss.  This project does appeal to me though.  Sometimes it feels good to step away from all things quilting occasionally.

OK, Here's my plan. I will do a classic cross stich sampler, but will design it as I go. I will dust off my cross stitch alphabet collection. That will have both order and improv.

I think I will just play. Trying to learn and create new versions of stitches. Maybe try new and different threads and I'm sure I'll try to add on a few beads once in a while.
Nell I have done some tiny crosstitch years ago. Had to give it up as my eyes didn't want to cooperate. ( I may have to get cateract surgery done pronto.)  Lol
So glad you're going to play along. Charisma is also starting a group on Facebook and wuloll be posting videos showing how to do several creative stitches.

I used to do stuff like that back in the early 70's, with the addition of some velvets and old doilies.  This time of year, I would hitchhike from upstate NY to wherever it was warm in Florida, and those big needles went a long ways towards personal protection.

When they were done on the edges, I would put a saying like "Old truckers never die, they just get a new Peterbuilt" in the middle and sell at truck stops.

Nowadays, I could not even climb into a rig, and would end up with a serial killer, for sure.  It just proves that you can't get old and wise without first being young and foolish.  Ah memories!

Rhinecliff, a river crossing across from Kingston.  At the time, it was between Tim Leary's haunt in Millbrook, and Woodstock.  Sadly, the entire area was gentrified and locals run off.  From there, I moved to the Shawangunks, part of the lost civilization between Mohonk and Minnewaska.

The new year is fast approaching. I'm SURE I'll get my hoop and treads out for the daily stitching challenge. Have any of you thought of using a shape other than a circle for your stitchery? I wonder if a star would be possible? Still pondering.

I think a star would be lovely! I may not end up with a circle myself. I am thinking of those quilt blocks in a square or maybe blackwork. Or maybe even other cross stitch. I think mine will not be l ike the others. I joined one FB group, but I will join the one you are in if you give us the link. I ordered aida and the hoop. Hope it arrives in time.

Yes, over-thinking is not in the plan. But it is important to set out parameters I think. Like what type of materials and general outline. Then it can evolve day by day.
