One Block Wonder
« on: December 29, 2016, 01:21:26 PM »
I've only made one but was fascinated with the way the quilt looks so different than the original fabric so I'm trying another.  I also have a little experience sewing hexies now since the other one was just learn as I go.

I decided to use panels and realized it wouldn't be very large as they are only 20 instead of 40 wide so I purchased a coordinating panel and going to use both of them.  Here's what a few of the hexies I cut so far look like.

Next up - learn paper piecing

Do you still have a picture of the panel you used? I love to see what it was and what it is after the cutting.

Great looking and interesting too.

This is one of the panels I used.  I purchased it first then realized with only being half as wide as regular fabric I might need more.

So fun! I'm wondering how you'll put it together. As I look led at the blocks I realized that I like it on the neutral background AND with the grey stripes too.

I have obw in my UFO box ....totally stumped on deciding placement to join the blocks! Now I hav something else to think about!

I am wondering how you cut these. OBW's are usually cut from six matching repeats. So did you match more than one panel?  Am I being dense?  The blocks are beautiful.

You have to have 6 repeats of the fabric. You stack them and cut them all at once. Not as difficult as I had feared when I first started.

It is super easy and so much fun.  Each set can be played with and  each triangle rotated 3 times for different effects.  It is so hard to decide which one you like the most out of each set of 6 pieces.

Hi Chigger - the one block wonders don't have any background or sashing of any type.  Just the hexies and a border if you want one.

So fun! I'm wondering how you'll put it together. As I look led at the blocks I realized that I like it on the neutral background AND with the grey stripes too.

dogwood - I bought 6 of the same panel and lined them up.    One was printed a little off so didn't line up exactly but it's got enough color I doubt anyone will notice.

When I do OBW/kaleidoscope quilts it drives me nuts if they aren't lined up & matching so I baste the panels together by stitching each layer at the same spot of the pattern. I try to get 2/3 stitches in each cut section ensuring that I don't mess up how they match.

Takes me a while but I'm happy when I'm done.

This reminds me of the Stack and Whack quilts made in the 90s.  A friend made one out of bright color veggie fabric with a black background and even though it's been 20 years I still remember how lovely that quilt was.

My first five quilts were S&Ws. I fell in love with the precision of the geometry.
