Mom's Primitive Santa
« on: February 04, 2017, 09:18:34 PM »
My mom has a collection of several hundred Santas made of all sorts of things. primarily she likes the old vintage stuff the best. She has many of these. She also likes hand made Santas so she found this picture in a magazine and asked if I would try to make one in this vein. She wants a primitive European style Santa or really St. Nick. No red just browns and black etc.

I have played with making large dolls and angels and snowmen in years past. So I am not totally a novice. but I also have never tried to make anything quite like this santa either.

Here is the inspiration picture she found

Here is my doll without the beard. the arms are just pinned on so far

And here he is with a beard  - this is a crepe wool braid I found online. You pull on the braid and release some of the wool and then stretch it as needed. I researched primitive santas on pinterest and found this info there. I ordered some and I am tickled with it. it is so much like a real beard it's crazy!!  I love it!  The beard was the thing I was worried would look crappy as we couldn't find anything locally that worked. so when I found this I was very very happy!

He doesn't have legs yet. She wants really really long legs LOL so this doll will be at least 3 feet tall if not more. I asked a friend for her pattern for the legs and boots and I need to get those made. I also have to make the cone hat to go on his head. Whether I put any hair on his head under the edge of his cap I'm not sure yet.

I have a ways to go to complete him but I know it will not be as good as the one in the picture. If Mom likes it then we're good. She likes it so far so we shall see how well he comes out.

it isn't done yet so you can't know it won't be as good as the one in the picture! I have confidence in you! You are making it for her so she will like it better anyway. Looking good so far!

thanks Shyleigh  I hope he turns out ok. My mom is not one to give praise. she thinks by criticising she is making me aware of how to make it better. so I don't expect any cries of joy LOL  but I do hope she likes him. If she doesn't  find any fault then I'll know she likes him.

my oldest dd loves those vintage santa's too.
Mom should be very happy your tackling this job without
a pattern, but I know, I know...
DH is 'kind' of like that. If he doesn't logically say anything "constructive",
your in the clear.
Once in a while he'll surprise me.
I like high praise and lots of it, lol...lie to me, but you'd better be convincing.
I hate lying  :D ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Looking good from here!.  If she finds fault she can try making it herself.  I have a very large collection of Santa's.  Many are very vintage European looking but none quite like this one.  Isn't that crepe wool wonderful?  I used it a lot because I worked on costuming for live theater.  We glued it on actor's faces, with spirit gum for very believable beards, etc.

Thanks Bev  LOL mom and I had a confab about him and she keeps telling me he is supposed to be primitive so he isn't supposed to look "finished". I have been spending alot of time figuring out how I want to do things instead of just letting it happen. LOL she thinks I am being way too precise and perfectionist about it.

So I'm off to work on him some more and see what happens LOL

You made him a really classy coat to wear, probably took some real ingenuity to accomplish.  Now, me, I would have taken some batting and tea dyed it a bit and made a sack coat for him.  You too much doubt self, Rhonda, you who are so inventive and so generous with your ideas.  Do your thing and if Momma doesn't appreciate it, someone else sure will.
