DOWN ON THE FARM
« on: January 11, 2017, 06:15:24 PM »
Attached see pictures of farm things (and a few other fill-ins that are not necessarily farm-y).  It has one or more "weird" factors.

What you will see is the result of a lot of machine embroidery pictures that I sewed out quite a few years ago, collected from Emb.Library at least as early as 2008.   The kitten is as big as the barn, if not bigger and, likewise all the critters and things are of varied sizes, so I was in a quandary as to how I could put them in a quilt, perspective-wise.  Over several years, what they did was sit in a box (also have a PICNIC set in there ... for another quilt project).  Recently, when I found myself with quite a bit of woodgrain fabric left over from Little Brown Bird, I decided to frame each of the farm pictures and 'hang' them on a fabric 'wall', which is what I've done.  The next hurdles (besides perspective) were to deal with the different 'frame' sizes and how to secure the pictures to the 'wall'.  I thought of  panelling or wallpaper, but then I would either have to applique each one (YUK!!!) onto the 'wall' or strip piece the background.  Nothing spoke to me!  Then I remembered all the leftover Balli Pops from the French braid quilt top that I made in 2009.  I pulled several each of 12 colors of those and made identical sets of those sewn together.

Now it really gets weird:  I took great pains to make sure the strips were sewn and cut the same size vert. & horiz. (FYI, Bali Pops are cut extremely poorly ... possibly by small Asian children.)  Then, just for laughs, I had to adjust most of them to fit around and between the frames ... because I did not have the foresight to ensure that the pictures would all fall into a 2" x 2" mathematical category.  Thus, the carefully measured and cut strips are now a bazillion different sizes in order to fit around and butt up to the various sized frames.  Eventually, I quit stewing about it and just did a basic 'cut & paste', so some are narrow, some are wide, etc.

This is to be a FMQ practice quilt.  It has all the necessary things to make it perfect for a variety of stitches.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

I think you did a great job with the various sizes you had to work with! It really looks great and most people will never guess that you didn't plan this out! Once it is quilted, it will be a treasure for someone.

What a great job you have done.  When I look at something with various sizes like this, I don't compare perspective  from picture to picture.

You did a fabulous job on it and I don't think it's "weird" at all.

What a unique quilt! I think it looks great, and I too don't compare picture to picture in size.

Thanks, Y'all.

I'm satisfied with the outcome re: perspective issues of this quilt; for me it works well that the bigger items are on the bottom so, looking up from bottom to top, the barn and other small stuff does not look absurd; they really look like they're off in the distance.  Generally, when I buy sets of embroidery designs for quilts, I get them all about the same size, so much less worry about placement.

It's awesome, Weezie.  I love the way you made everything fit.  Are you going to do the FMQ on it?  Bravo!!
Jean............

I'd rather spend money on my quilting hobby than the therapist.... I'm probably $$$ ahead.... and I'm happy!!

Thanks, Jean.  For quite a while, I didn't think I would get everything to fit.  It seems like I removed more stitches than I put it.   ;)   Yes, I'll FMQ it.  I'll do a different stipple in each white area; don't know yet what to do in the colored areas.  I have erasable pens to doodle with and a nice piece of acrylic to doodle on before I sit down at the machine to play.  I haven't done any at all since I did the scotty dog quilt and I finished that in Oct. of '15.  Boy, time sure flies!

Thank you Mary & Moonglow.  It would be the perfect quilt for a boy.  All the boys I knew are now grown men.  When I finish a quilt, I try to find the perfect person to give it to, so I'll see how that works out for Down On the Farm.  I expect it'll be quite a while before it's ready for give-away.

This is wonderful! You did a very good job with placing them. If you need a place for it to go I do live on a farm! Just saying!

I've said it elsewhere Weezie but I will say it again - it looks GREAT.   You are about the only one looking at perspective, the rest of us are just enjoying the farm.

Thanks, all!   I'm glad you like it.

Two things I want to say:

1.  I didn't mean to be sexist ... in fact, I think a little girl would enjoy that farm as much as would a little boy.

2.  I'm trying to convince y'all how important perspective is!!  Just look, for goodness sake, at how far away the wee barn looks because I put it up at the top corner and put all those honkin' big baskets and critters, etc. down toward the bottom.
