I need some opinions about a HQ-16 LA machine.  I haven't even seen it yet but am trying to talk myself into buying it.  It's a great price.  The machine is probably 8 years old with computer hook-up.  I'm sure it needs upgrading.  It was used to quilt one quilt.  The 80 year old lady that bought it died after one quilt so her husband donated it to the church and the church wants to sell it so they can buy some new sewing machines.  They told me that having it as a community LA machine would probably be disaster.  I guess all LA machines tend to be one user friendly.

I'm hoping there is someone out there that can give me a little input on the HQ-16. Or, if you could just tell me that questions I'm needing to ask, that would be helpful, too.  I've found a dealer close to my winter house where I will keep this machine.  They offer classes and such.

So I'd love some opinions here.  And, thanks for looking.

I have the HQ 16 sit down machine, very user friendly, tons of you tube instructions videos. HQ makes many of the LA machines that are tagged under other names, like the Baby Lock badge, Husqvarna Viking badge, I am sure there are others I cannot think of right now.

Thanks, YaYa.  The machine I'm looking at has rails to quilts up to king size.  But there are so many HQ16 machines that I'm not sure exactly what it is.  I have called a dealer 20 miles away from my winter house and they will help me get it set up and teach me how to use it.  I'm thinking at the price I've been given I'd have to be crazy to pass this up.

I have the Avante  HQ18. I love this machine. They have wonderful customer service. They have helped me so much over the phone and they found me a great local dealer (with in 50 miles). If it's a good price I'd go for it.

Thanks, Jeri.

Everything I read about these is good.  And, the price is fantastic so I'm thinking this machine is for me.  I go look at it on Friday.  I'll let you know.

The Sweet 16 is as good a place as any to start, especially if the price is right. I started with a Janome Artistic 18 but have since upgraded to a Handi-Quilter Avante. You can go to Bits and Pieces quilt shop web site in Pelham, NH to check if the price is really right. She is the largest Handi-Quilter dealer/rep on the East Coast. Liz is great for questions, gets great teachers in her shop for classes and service and tech support for Handi-Quilter machines is top-notch. I have nothing but good things to say aboput Handi-Quilter thanks to Liz and all the other people in the shop!

Sorry guys and gals (I think I remembered that Stewy didn't want to be called a gal, right?).  I didn't mean to leave you all hanging on this issue.   The machine is set up 90 minutes from me so I hadn't had a chance to even go look at it until yesterday.  I taught a class over close to where the machine was set up so after class I went to visit.  I'm in love.  Really..... so geeked.  This is a HQ Sixteen with the pro-stitcher computer set up.  I will have to get the computer programs updated but the HQ dealer down state said that won't be a problem.

It has the original paperwork, purchased in 2008.  I stitched just a bit on it and it moves smoothly and stitches very well.  So now the Big Guy and I will have to go take everything apart, package it up, and bring it to the cabin.  We will be here a few more weeks and it will go to the winter house with me.

The machine is currently set up with the rails for a queen but it has extentions for a king.  It also has a chair and pantographs and various other things that I don't even know how to use at this point.  But, I'm willing to learn.  And, I've been watching U-tube videos put out by HQ to see what this baby will do.  She will do way more than I ever imagined.  Again, so geeked.

So, I don't have it yet. We plan to go get it this week. It will probably be a month before I get it moved here, moved there, and take a class or two to make sure I'm setting it up correctly and am able to play without doing any damage.  The HQ dealer tells me they are willing to get me going on it and they have a LA club, too.  $10 monthly for the club meetings.  I'm sure I'll learn lots there, too.

I'm as happy as a clam.  This one fell in my lap so it was really meant to be.  Now to get it safely home.

Is this set up on a frame then? I was under the impression they were sit down machines (you move the quilt, not the machine). If it is on a frame....I'm a little green! LOL  Lucky you!! And so happy for you!!

Yes, it's on a frame.  I think the HQ 16 machine offered now is a sit-down machine but not this one.  It's 8 years old.

But, don't be green.  It's easy for me to say that but I feel that way when I hear of great deals that others get.  I'm so excited to learn and play.  I called my sis today..... she has an older LA, manual.  She's a little green, too.  But, I told her to come play.  We're already planning our winter sewing.

Oh goodie!!!!  I'm so excited for you that I can't stand it!  I'm almost giddy!  Yes, that machine will be great for you.  I looked at them and was torn between that machine and the A-1, but I ran across my machine kind of like you did this one for you.

The 16 came out as a sit down, but can be converted to a frame.  You could also convert your's to a sit down if you ever decided that you just weren't into standing up to quilt.

OK....to tear down....here are some tips.  TAKE A PIC of every section prior to starting to take it apart.  That way when you put it back together, you will know what it is supposed to look like.  Also...label ALL the parts #1 goes to #1,  #2 goes to #2.  I'm sure the dealer will take care of all the putting together, but if possible, if you take a bolt out of a hole, remove the piece it was holding and put the bolt back into that hole so it won't get lost.  Make sure that the frame is absolutely leveled when it is set back up.  Your machine should stop where it is parked and NOT move any direction when released.  In other words, no drift.

Oh wow...I'm so excited for you!  Now we can talk rulers, needles, thread, tools,...lol....fun!

Oh, thank you so much, Patti.  I've watched all the U-tubes about setting this outfit up and how to load a quilt.  I also watched an hour's worth of how the computer works.  It's all so wonderful that I still can hardly believe it.

Your suggestions are great.  Everything you said sounds just like the way I take things apart.  The DH doesn't want to wait to do those things but he will this time.  My machine, my rules.  I hope we can make all the connections and get it on Wednesday.  That will be the first part.

Since the lady that originally owned it was 80, she had a chair for this, too.  I can't believe all the extra stuff coming along with it.  I'm in for a new passion aren't I?

Yes, I want to know about rulers and needles and threads and  everything else.  I just wish we lived closer so we could share ideas face to face.  QH will work though.  Yes, FUN..... lots of FUN!!
