Where are the Hand quilter's?
« on: January 25, 2016, 01:30:43 PM »
I know I have been lax in posting here. My mom fell and broke her hip at my house right before Christmas so I am busy with her. I stayed up there a few weeks and then started coming home.
WOuld love to see what everyone is working on.
I am in some groups on FB that do hand quilting...anyone else on FB watching?
Hopefully soon, I will be back to it. I have plenty to work on...

Busy hand quilting. It takes a while to do bed size quilts.

True and we love to see your work as you go.  I love to look at the backs and see the patterns develop and inch by inch as they get closer to being quilted is like almost finishing a book to me.

I like to slow down and slow stitch.
It's good therapy for me to sit and sew four hours. Watch tv or just listen to music.
Time to think about things while stitching, reflect.

Technology today, and I do understand not every one has time to sit and hand stitch with their daily lives, but it calls for getting things done quickly.
By being a hand quilter I take some fabric, thread and a needle and create something I think is beautiful. It allows us to express ourselves, share with others and make something we can snuggle under later or gift, and hold the memories.

I' sure most can look at a quilt and remember, how, who, what, when and where you made it.
Memories...
And memories take time to make too.

Yes, I am a hand quilter by choice....

SHow us your slow stitch projects..

Would you believe, I'm just looking at doing a quilt that I started years ago and then hurt my hand.  Well, went to get it ready, thread, needle, thimble, got the quilt and OMG 1/2 of the designs are gone.   :'(  So went looking for designs, yep can't find.  Looked and looked and looked.  Well finally found!  So now have to try and retrace them which is going to be a task as its already sandwiched and started.  :(  This is something I'd really like to get to as its a survivor of the fire and would like to put it behind me.

I don't have any tops finished right now for handquilting.  I've machine quilted only a couple and am trying to give myself more experience with that.  In the meantime, I'm still plugging away at hexagons and SLOWLY making progress on my Farmer's Wife.  That one will be handquilted but I still have a long ways to go with the piecing.

Are you machine or hand piecing FW?  When I did mine, I hand pieced it also including the binding, just to say I have done one completely by hand!

As the sweet little boy in the Subaru commercial says "I'm here, I'm here!".  I'm coming down the home stretch hand quilting my first needle turn applique quilt.  Am so sick and tired of the project, I could spit.  At this point, am doing just enough quilting to keep the project together and then will put it away until next fall and perhaps by then, will know how I want to fill in the background areas and borders.

I'm here just don't post much. I'm busy working on this curves quilt at home and my travel quilt when I'm out taking kids here and there. Plus homeschool and teaching a quilting class.
I'm about 3/4th of the way done with the curves quilt, and for the life of me I can't find the pic of my travel project....

Sounds like everyone is at different stages but I am so glad to know there are still hand stitchers here on the QH.

I love that commercial too.."i'm here"

Sewcrafty, I have done that before. Back when I was starting to use those disappearing ink quilt pens, the blue stayed on until wet, the purple leaves after so much time.
I didn't read the directions and spent hours marking a king size quilt....
The next morning I thought I dreamed the whole thing, not a mark was left, now I read the directions...arghhhhhhhhhh

I hope to see everyone's when they finish....

And Squirrelfood, if I climbed under my frame, I would be stuck there calling "i've fallen and I can't get up" so I get it. :)

Happy sewing...

Hi, I do have a project on the go finally :)  Disappearing 4 patch with a mottle and  a Fossil Fern charm pack.
Big stitch in Black and ivory.  Fun!!!  My first time using tape to match..no one told me before I marked  it - that I should use blue painters tape, I should have googled it :-[  Next time!
Oops, I have to go get the photo.

Here it is, the lines look wonky because it is draped over my chair. Wow it goes fast and leaves a dramatic change.  I may be hooked on big stitch.

I'm cutting by template and machine piecing.  I remember your FW and was amazed you did it all by hand!  Such an undertaking!  My hexagons will be the one I can say was done entirely by hand.

Mine too.  The friend who gave me my first intro quilting lesson was old school and considered machine quilting to not be "real quilting".  That was many many years ago and I'd venture to guess that she's changed her opinion by now.  I certainly admire the amazing things machine quilters can do but absolutely love the quiet restful work of handquilting.

Beautiful quilts hispatch, I am addicted to applique too, so doubly appreciate your quilts. I'm practicing machine quilting but would rather use a hand quilted quilt, they are much more cuddly. I feel like I'm cheating if I don't finish it myself in some way..just can't send my quilts to a LA, I like the relaxation of handwork too.

I am just finishing my hand-pieced Piecing the Past. Just need to do the last two blocks and the setting. My plan is to start hand-quilting next month. I also have two other hand-pieced tops that need attention. I am glad to see this thread is alive again. And I love to see all the lovely quilts! I bought a new lap frame that y'all suggested. Just have to find that tiny metal piece. And practice!!! Can someone repost the video?

Enjoyed reading and seeing the new posts. I am anxious to get one or two on my frames and begin again. Today I'm getting the house back up and normal, then tonight will be sewing on the Whole CLoth #2 that Ladybugtx gave me....One of Horice's she bought me.

First weekend home the entire time since my mom broke her hip, she went home yesterday....
