Mary R....I don't use a frame either. When I started out I did but handquilting a king size quilt a few years back quickly broke me of that! It was just easier to spread it out than fight a frame. I haven't gone back.

Here's my current projects. I always seem to have more than one going on. The wedding ring is one section of four. It will be king size when done. I'm doing it in sections because otherwise it is so heavy and I feel I will never, ever finish. This one is for my sister and her hubby. And after that the ONLY king size quilts I will make will be for myself.

The other one is a top I put together, didn't like, and finally started on this year. I love it now!

Very nice quilts! Your stitches are wonderful too. Did you make up your own patterns? I think I should practice on something small for a while. I only have 11 blocks done out of 40 for LBB. Then all the fancy borders.. For some reason I want to do this myself. Something simple on the borders and I have no clue what to do about the blocks. Any suggestions would help greatly.

Thank you. I use stencils for the quilting designs. Nowhere near talented enough to draw that out! Can you show us a picture of what you're working on?

I'm new at this. I have to learn the rocking stitch but my fingers fumble. I'll get it with practice. Question- Do you have to have a frame to do a double bed size or if heavily basted can you use a hoop? I'm not worried about time spent, but would like it to turn out fairly decently. I really know very little so any help would be appreciated.  I'm appliqueing LBB and that will take me two to three more years. What do you think?

Mary, I do large quilts with a hoop on my lap, some people don't use a hoop at all, but I need it, it helps me make sure the area I'm working on stays good on the back. And I work from the middle out also.  I don't baste, I use Hobbs 80/20 cotton fusible batting. Have used it for years and love it!

Mary, I hand quilted my DGD's wedding quilt and it was a king.  I started it on my quilt frame but it was larger than the frame so couldn't do much there.  Then, I used a hoop in the middle section because I wanted to avoid any tucks.  But I ended up putting the frame aside.  I have a large oval hoop and it just seemed to get in the way of my reaching to the middle.

Like everything else, you have to experiment with what works for you.  I'll quilt the LBB by hand when I ever get to that point.  Let's hope I live that long.

And, just so you all know, I've seen Mary's LBB blocks and they are beautiful.

I'll try to post some pictures in the photo gallery if I can get my DH to help me. I'm just beginning and some need to have the embellishing done. We'll see what we can do tomorrow. Thanks!

I use a hoop....I get all messy on the back if I don't.   I have a big round one that is a good size for me to have on my lap....and if the cats don't snuggle in too much, it's easy to turn round.

I bought a good 14" hoop 20 years ago. Well worth the money I paid for it, I believe it was around $15. at the time. Don't know what they are now.  Just don't get one of those flimsy ones.  Here is a picture of my quilt in the hoop and done.  And yes Like mamahippychicky said, it I don't have a hoop it is hard to keep the back flat.

Beautiful quilt Sue!
I'm hopeless with a hoop or frame. I've tried a few. I'm hoopless and love it.
My Hawaiian is on its last stages. QAYG by hand. I've added a second layer of batting and machine ditched and basted the edges. I plan to add quilting around and inside of the motifs. With all of those layers I may end up with big stitch inside of the motifs.

MtGr your quilt is so pretty!  Everyone finds what works best for them, I tried the QAYG method, but hate sewing the seams by hand on the back. So a Hoop is for me, and helps me keep the backing flat working out from the middles, all the way around.

This is the method where you quilt the top and batting then sew together with a one piece backing and add more quilting. My first time with this method. No back seams.  I'll have to reserve my opinion till I'm finished the whole process

Finished the Hawiiain quilt above this evening. I won't add an extra batting if I use this technique again. It looks good but took some extra quilting to secure that extra batting and it was difficult to stitch through all of the layers. I'm happy with the result though.  I have another one ready to quilt but I plan to QAYG with sashing and machine quilting.
