Hand quilting is such a serene experience.  Unfortunately, my hands can no longer handle bed size quilts but I still do throws and smaller projects.

I have not been hand quilting lately, but I have several tops that are begging for it. BettyBoop, thanks for the nudge. The hoop I bought several years ago is still in the shrink wrap.. not sure of the brand. It supposedly swivels. I also bought a little bent piece of metal to use under the quilt. From what I remember, you keep the top really loose and manipulate the quilt over a stationery needle. My 365 is taking up so much time, I am neglecting this... Time to get on it!

I'm working on a Hawaiian quilt.  12 blocks of needle turn and hand quilted (echo) I've used a book by Elizabeth Root called Hawaiian Quilting from Amazon.   I'll post a photo when I get them all laid out together.    I love QAYG hand quilting in the summer when it is too warm to be piecing in my south facing sewing room and too hot to be working under a whole quilt elsewhere.

I love Hawaiian quilting! I made a pillow once and my son has kept it in his living room for 4 moves now. That tells me it is a success. A whole quilt is a lot of work!

Here is progress photo of my Hawaiian quilt. I'll add more quilting around the applique and in it on some when I add the next layer of batting and the backing. I'm quilting on Hobbs 80/20 and the block only. I'll trim the blocks press open the seams and layer as usual. I've never used this QAYG technique before so it will be interesting.  I've used the sashing method before but I really don't like the seams on the back.

That is coming along beautifully, Mtngrl.  I love the Hawaiian quilts.  The DH and I got to see many of them when we visited last December.  I bought a pattern that had 6 different Hawaiian blocks and sat and watch some ladies stitching and teaching the Hawaiian method.  This is another one I'd love to make.

Heres a quilt that I started hand quilting, I believe in Feb this year. Cant think of the name for it. But have a ideal what book I got my pattern from. I'm 75-80% of done. I have 1 partial block to do. And I can start on the 4 strips around the block. I usually hand quilt  7 nights a week 4-5 hr's. When I'm hand quilting I have my chihuahua Minnie & Coa-Coa under my quilt. They dont move. They eventually move cause my back start to shape like my recliner. And I get a little stiff. Take care everyone Don-isewman

I'm new at this. I have to learn the rocking stitch but my fingers fumble. I'll get it with practice. Question- Do you have to have a frame to do a double bed size or if heavily basted can you use a hoop? I'm not worried about time spent, but would like it to turn out fairly decently. I really know very little so any help would be appreciated.  I'm appliqueing LBB and that will take me two to three more years. What do you think?

Mary R. - I abandoned any kind of frame or hoop decades ago.  As you as you start hand quilting in the middle and work out from there you should be fine.  Heavy basting is a good idea.  Frequently check the back of the quilt to be sure you are keeping it smooth.  I have hand quilted  at least a dozen full size quilts without a hoop or frame.
