Upstairs is nicer than the downstairs
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:22:52 AM »
I was just wondering why the top stitching on my hand quilts looks so perfect or as close to it as it can be with my vision, but the under side or backing is sometimes slanted or looks less than straight.
You may not pay attention as I have lately.
I keep turning it up so I can see the back and taking out stitches and doing it again.
Then. light bulb, don't worry about it, you'll never get it quilted. :D :D

Like Cathy Miller's song, You can quilt it out.....

Deb it could be the angle of your needle. Are you poking it in at an angle instead of straight down? JMHO. Or the backing could be shifting on you?  lindab

You know, my vision has very little peripheral and I don't see straight like I used to. That oculd actually be the reason. I mean to go down and up. Ill hav to angle my fingers better.
I knew someone would know what I was doing.
When I lap quilt, it's easier once the quilt is done enough to hold it's shape so I can sit back and relax. That's more of a rocking stitch.
Thanks Linda, and so glad you are doing so well. We have to take care of ourselves.
Happy quilting.

Debbie I never look at the back till I'm through. It just drives me crazy. LOLI'd never git anything quilted if I did. Once it's done I look at the back & don't even see all the li'le imperfections that I would have freaked out about while I was quiltin'.

I learned a quick lesson on this one. I will not ever use black doe the backing. LOL
It has straightened up a bit. And the bright variegated thread didn't help either.
But it's almost done.

WElcome to the QH Isabella....be sure to introduce yourself in the Hello section.

I decided recently, that no matter how much I try, you can't do perfect front to back stitches without taking hours to do just a row...So I am a hand quilter and don't have perfect stitches but....the only other choice is to use a machine....
I have plenty of those but chose to hand quilt....

SO enjoy my "odd" stitches, they were sewn with love. :)

I can go one better, my downstairs is better than my upstairs.  Maybe a case of PPQ (piss poor quilting)?  My back stitches are tiny and great looking, if it were the other way, I could just ignore the back.

Your so right Debbie.  If perfect was the only thing I could aspire to, would have had to quit all aspects of quilting in 1978.  Very little in life more relaxing than having hand quilting.

You can't see upstairs and downstairs at the same time and who puts their quilts upside down on the bed?  So, does it really matter that much?  I've only entered a couple of quilts in contests so I don't think perfection is as important as we all think.  They all cuddle the same, right?

Are you kidding me?! I just posted a rather long post on your Hand Quilting thread! It ended with the problem you posted here! I like the way you put it as Upstairs and Downstairs! LOL
I really, really wish I could sit and hand quilt with you...what a bleesing THAT would be!
I quilt, therefore I am!

Have you tried the tiger tape Deb?  Since your vision is working against you maybe if you put this down to follow by, it might help?  Just a thought.

I have TIger tape in my supplies....
Honestly, my stitching is ok for handquilting.
IMHO if your stitching is perfect, than you might as well use a machine...LOL

I like, having finished so many quilt tops for friends, and following the stitching already on the piece work....makes it look like they did it.

SOmething about looking closely and seeing those uneven stitches, makes my heart patter..  sewn with lots of time and love....

Deb seriously, I don't sweat that kind of stuff.  I think that's why I like hand work so much.  Whether hand quilting or hand embroidery, if its not perfectly spaced that's absolutely fine with me.  I don't strive to look like a machine, I do for enjoyment.  :)
