I have started to hand quilt Friends of Baltimore. I plan on outlining and the cross hatching the background. I am using an off white variegated thread.  The backing if off white.  My question is where is is heavily appliqued, and needs some quilting, I wanted to use a similar color thread, but if I go all the way through this will show on the back, so what do you hand quilters think about in those areas, just going up to the backing and not through it?   It will help define some of the pieces, but will also keep all the thread on the back the same color.  Have never done this before, so am asking what other hand quilters think about this?

For example, right now I'm doing the ship block and want to go over the top of waves which are up against the black boat, and I don't want to use the off white on the black boat.

Just me but I would just outline the items such as a flower a boat or each design.  that way you wont have to go thru them.
I am a longarmer with pricing starting at .015 per square inch, send pm for information please

The one I just quilted was done in navy thread. The backing is white..so yeah, it shows. NOT a bad thing. Just makes you more conscious of how the stitching looks from the back. And yes, it's much easier to quilt AROUND those things rather than getting blisters trying to quilt through them.

I've done that to cheat in fullness and it held up well.  Depending on the size of the area covered, you might want to add a few stitches from the backside to the batting.  I would be interested in hearing the opinion of a show judge on this.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes I would love to hear what a judge would have to say also. I really don't like the idea of different color threads on the back...so I think in the heavy appliqued places I will ust matching thread and just not go all the way through, just into the batting to help give is some dimension.   Now if it is a really big area, I might try just going from the back, and again just into the batting with the off white thread.  Oh my aching fingers already. LOL

Sue, I'll be interested in hearing from a judge also.  Maybe Holice will respond.  In my personal opinion as long as you have substantial quilting on the back, doing some quilting not totally through should be ok.  It wouldn't be much different that doing a type of thread painting that you might do prior to adding the backing to the quilt.

I still want to hear what you have to say Holice, but as of right now, I have decided to go with the matching thread on the top. As some of these areas are just to big to leave un-quilted.  So I figured it would be best to have different colors on the back then to have white going over all those vibrant colors on the top.  But like I said I still want to hear what you think??

It is absolutely beautiful, Sue.  I'm sure I'm going to have the same problems when I get my LBB done and ready to quilt so I'll be watching to see how it goes.  I can't wait to see it all finished.

Sue, how long have you been doing all of this fabulous applique and hand quilting.  Looking at this one, I am sure that I would need at least two lifetimes and I would still have a mess.  They are just so beautiful.

Actually up until a few years ago, if I seen applique on a quilt pattern, I would avoid it!  Then all of a sudden I just wanted to try it.  But I'm one that has to jump in with both feet, there is nothing in me that says "lets start simple".   I have done 6 since 2009, and here they are in the order I did them.  As far as hand quilting, I have done it since I started quilting in 1995.  Wish I would have started sooner, before the hands started giving out!

5. Enchanted Autumn
6. Friends of Baltimore

That averages out to one a year and I can't even imagine the fabric planning, the cutting, the embellishment the applique, then the putting together of the blocks, then quilting..Amazing!

Sue, I am totally impressed with your work but WOW!!  can't imagine doing so much work so quickly.  I figure the LBB quilt I'm working on will take me 3 years or so.  And I'm not even thinking about the hand quilting in that estimate. You must be quilting 24/7.

Thank you! I do get in a lot of quilting time, especially in the winter.  I can not just sit and watch TV, so I always have a needle in my hand! And once in my leg! LOL  I went back and checked the dates on my pictures as it seemed fast to me too, but I have slowed way down, and it was actually 2010 that I did the first one. I did the first 2 in 2010 the second two in 2011, late 2011 I started Friends of Baltimore and threw Enchanted Autumn in there to just break it up for a while.  I have about 2 1/2 years in Friends of Baltimore.
