How-To: Drafting Seam Allowances
« on: October 12, 2014, 03:07:38 PM »
So I joined my local Quilting Guild (go Waterford Quilters!), and now I'm sitting down to start piecing together the top of my member's badge. The only problem is, I have no idea how to draft seam allowances. I haven't cut anything, all I've done is trace all the individual pieces out on tracing paper. Help?
Rabbi Ishmael, the son of Rabbi Yossei, said, “He who learns in order to teach, to him the means will be granted both to learn and to teach; but he who learns in order to practise, to him the means will be granted to learn, and to teach, to observe, and to practise.” Pirkei Avot 4:6
Yes, I'm Jewish. Curious? Ask me anything!

add 1/4 inch seam to all sides.  Say you want a finished block 4 inches square you would draft out a 4 1/2 inch square.
I am a longarmer with pricing starting at .015 per square inch, send pm for information please

If you are dealing with half square triangles, cut two squares 1-1/2" larger than the finished square size.  Draw a diagonal line through the center, sew 1/4" in from the line on both sides, then cut on the line and check for square.  You should be a whisker bigger than you need.

Another way is to use your ruler, pinning the template on the fabric, adding 1/4" and go around each side with the rotary cutter.  You can probably use a glue stick for the same result as pins, if you are going to wash it before using it.

Can we peek?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've cut out all my pieces (with the seam allowances-- thanks for the help!), and I'm slowly piecing everything together. I figure if I do two pieces a night, I should be done with the top in about a week. So I'll see about posting a photo of the finished top on Friday or Saturday.

Thanks for the help!

Penguin I love your quote.  And it's so appropriate for this forum.  :) :)
Micah 6:8 What does the Lord require of thee? Do justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God.
May the majority of the tears you cry be tears of laughter and the rest tears of love.
