Best fabric for backing
« on: October 07, 2015, 07:15:36 AM »
I have never hand quilted and really want to try it.  I made a granny square quilt with reproduction fabrics and would love to try and hand quilt it, using the big stitch quilting method.

I love, love flannel for backing and use it in 99% of the quilts I make. Would I regret using flannel for the backing of my first hand quilted project?  If so, what would you all recommend?

If you are doing big stitch quilting, it would probably work.

I hand quilt all of mine, and use flannel a lot.  Really no difference, and I love the feel of it while I'm quilting.  Go for it!

Can be referred to as "utility quilting"  Did one with #8 DMC, like or is crochet thread.  Stitches are larger than traditional quilting.  On flannels or homespun material it is beautiful, hope that this shows the stitch.

I do regular quilting by hand and never had a problem with flannel...I thought that big stitch was just bigger stitches.  Either way you will be fine.

I love working with flannel for hand quilting.  It's a looser weave (the fuzz sort of fills in, if that makes sense).  It also doesn't squirrel all around the way some thinner fabrics do but, rather, stays put where it's supposed to be.

I was thinking the same thing...doesn't look like the big stitch I was thinking about.  That looks like perfect quilting too me!

Thank you.  The stitches are big, the block is big too.  :-)It is done with perle #8 cotton thread.  Is a thick thread that we used to use for doilies.    Had to order the perle cotton and understand that it comes in many colors.  Was fun & quick to do, didn't use a hoop and will be doing more.  Plaid flannel quilts would be wonderful done with it.  Look up "big stitch quilts" and you will find lots of ideas.

Bluebird, your stitches look beautiful!!!  I am going to (hopefully) baste my great granny square quilt later this week. I will use the perle cotton in white to quilt it.  And I read that painters tape is good to help keep lines straight.  And I will need all the help I can get!! LOL!!

Great idea to use the painters tape Sherri.   You will enjoy doing the big stitch, is relaxing and ya don't need a hoop.  Be sure and post pictures.
