I should  add, D F was Navy Armed Guard on the merchant  marine supply  ship. He was not Merchant Marine. Oops.

This is my Dad, Glenn Arthur Ayotte, the picture was taken in Japan right after the Bomb was dropped. So this is 1944, he was barely 16 years old,  He was just a little over 15 when he went into the service.  I never noticed the date discrepancy that made him so young as he was born in 1928. until about 6 years ago and asked him how can this be...his answer, "I lied about my age". Apparently they didn't do a lot of fact checking back then! He lived to come home, but had a lot of health problems later due to being there.

Sue what a great pic. What dedication  from so many who were so young. Many 16 and 17 year Olds lied and served.

Yes there were many so young that didn't make it back home, that's why I get to irritated at some of these kids today...they need a safe room as their feelings are hurt!  They don't realize what the generations before them sacrificed!

I forgot my Husband, Duane, thankfully he is still among us! But he is a Vet, served between Korean War and the Viet Nam War...so he got really lucky! He was a Paratrooper in the Army.

Oh Donna, I know what your DGS is dealing with, as my Nephew is suffering from PTSD since being in Afghanistan. His wife says it is like living with someone you don't even know anymore.  The sacrifices these Men and Women make are unbelievably great.

My Dad was a captain in the tank corps in North Africa and Italy.  He received a Silver Star, but demanded that it be awarded to his entire company...and they did!  He was wounded several times and also was hospitalized for malaria, both overseas and when he got back.  He died 6 months after I was born in 1948 from the effects of the malaria.

About 8 years ago, with the growth of the internet, I was able to locate the reunion group from his company.  I wrote a letter to their newsletter, asking if anyone remembered him and  I was overwhelmed with the letters and pictures that I received.  They shared so many specific memories of him and even referred me to several WWII history books that he's mentioned in.  One of the members even sent me som war memorabilia from serving with him, saying that his kids didn't want it and he didn't want it to go into the dumpster.  Mostly, though, it was the trust and regard they had for him that brought me to tears over and over.

Isn't that just something!  Something so special, that really lifted you up, finding out what your parent did and how they were respected, and you had no idea probably.  Makes your backbone a little stiffer, doesn't it, and your tear container a little emptier.

I wonder if our dads crossed paths.  Mine commanded a tank with the 9th Armored Division, landing at Normandy and staying in Europe.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your story is so touching. I'm glad several have shared here.  I am thinking  of  doing  the paperwork  for  my dad's  dd-214.  He wouldn't  allow us to see it, mom said he was due medals and refused them. He hated his ribbons and would  not  explain  why. But I can guess. He was a gunner. And he was a man who held all life precious. If I get his dd-214  out of respect  I would  never apply for the  medals he refused.
