How Was Your Day? Mine Was Great - NOT!
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:43:32 PM »
;) Just got home from the hospital about an hour ago.  Today started out pretty good - decided to make a batch of Beef Barley Soup and a Crock Pot Beef Stew or maybe a Beef Chilli.  Had the soup ingredients in the stock pot and on slow simmer and decided a couple tablespoons of Smoked Paprika would add a nice little zip. Proceed to take the lid off the small glass spice jar and the dang lid threads crossed and locked up.  Well I thought.....I just give it a good twist and it'll straighten out and open up.
Well.....it opened up alright - guess I don't know my own strength - broke the lid off the neck of the bottle and what glass was left in the lid when barreling right into my left index finger.  Those with squeamish tum-tum, divert your eyes.
Couldn't get it to stop bleeding, there was a sizeable deep gash and I couldn't tell if there were any glass fragments inside the cut so off I trundle to emergency for what I thought would be a typical never-ending wait for medical attention.  Estimated I'd be fortunate if I made it back home by Easter.  As I'm right handed, thank goodness it was my left finger that got mutilated.  Would hate the thought of being hand-tied from doing any quilting for the next week or so while it heals.
Needless to say, I was astounded....only 4 folks ahead of me in Triage and after they took down all my medical particulars and registered me for a Doctor's consult, they immediately ushered me into the suture room where after a 10 minute wait, the Doctor came in, assessed the cut, flushed and froze my finger and blessed me with four beautifully executed french knot Quilting sutures, LOL.  Just to be on the safe side as I couldn't remember my last immunization - he gave me a Tetanus shot to ward off any possible infections from the spice laddened glass.  As the cut is right in the area where my finger bends, have to keep it immobilized as much as possible (finger splint time) so the skin can heal closed and in 7-10 days if no infection sets in and it's healing, I can go and have the stitches removed.  I was so pleased and impressed by the improvement in the Emergency Wait Time due to revamping of protocols. From arrival at Emergency to time back home I was only gone 2 hours - WOW ;)

To be honest - this wasn't an accident - it was my way of extending my empathetic solidarity to Willie as he embarks on his second surgery today and his ensuing new sutures.  Didn't want him to feel he was alone, LOL :-[
By the way.......the freezing is beginning to leave my finger and it's really starting to HURT!!!!  Time to make poor baby a medicinal drink (or two :o )

Ouch!! Long ago (like about 25 years ago) I was making an expansive gesture and my hand came down on a piece of metal corner bead. Trip to the emergency room and I still have the scar! I have never forgotten and I can share your pain! Hope you heal quickly!!

Doc checked it all over - doesn't appear there are any glass shards and doesn't foresee muscle/nerve damage.  All feeling to my finger felt VERY intact and movement unimpaired before freezing which I believe is a good sign, so hopefully I can count myself lucky. Although...............I can't type worth S*&^$$!!!!t , can't tell you how many times I've had to delete and re-type just so you can read what I'm trying to say :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ ::) .

Medicinal drink isn't helping much in the dexterity department tho' but it's sure goin' down real good, LOL
Hey Willie, my fine furry friend - wishing you well and sending HUGE HUGS & SMOOCHIES! ;D

Well, it looks like some of us are off to a good start(NOT) for 2016.  Here's how mine has been.  I slipped and fell on the snow, broke right fibula, tibia, and tore the ankle out of its socket.  Will be incapaticated 6-8 weeks.

Oh pain! I actually did the same thing at the grocery, shopping for spices. Grabbed a nice big glass bottle of basil off the shelf--which happened to be broken--and put a lovely slice in almost exactly the same place. Hope you heal fast.

Got to finish the simmering - turned off 1/2 hour ago and it smells great.  Opened a new bottle of Smoked Paprika and added as planned on my return from Emerg (without impaling myself again I might add)  Soup smells fantastic and a quick taste tells says it's going to be great once it's had a chance to meld overnight.  Looking forward to healthy servings over the next few days along with some fresh baked bread or buns!  Just what's needed to chase away the cold, frigid temps and heal the wounded soul (or finger, LOL).
Thanks everyone for your well wishes  ;)

OMGosh! you and  pocoellie! Hope you all heal up nice and fast...what a way to start the New Year! Glad the glass didn't go into the soup too, and ruin a good pot of soup. I'm thinking if Willie could talk, he is saying at least you don't have to wear a flip-en cone of shame on top of it! LOL   You better not go to chewing those out!  I have a scar on my middle finger from years ago, I was washing a glass and had the rag down it it twisting it to get it cleaned and the glass broke, and yes to the ER for stitches. I swear finger cuts have to about the worse.

And talk about good starts to the New Year...I'm sporting a black eye and cut cheekbone, and Waylon probably has a head ache. Last night I was bending over to pull the covers back on the bed and get into bed as Waylon came running down the hall and up the stairs to the bed and smack into my left eye, he hit the bone above the eye and my cheekbone has a slight cut. Black and blue over my eyelid, a getting worse, because this morning it didn't look like it was going to turn.  When he hit, it actually felt like 3 of my top teeth felt like they were moving some! I don't need to lose any more teeth!  So lets all try and take it easy ladies and slow the injuries for the start of the New Year!! Hope you both heal up fast!

Owwie, Owwie, Owwy!  It was painful just reading about your accidents, Fersid, Pocoellie, and you too Sue.  Good grief, what is the quilting world coming to.  My only accident was in using my daughter's almost new Janome and having the same thing happen that happened to her twice already, the machine jams and then goes ape, the needle goes down and tears the bobbin assembly awry and then bends the needle.  She won't touch it anymore since it happened to her twice and been repaired.  I had sewed on it yesterday and this evening for an hour or so when it went ballistic again.  At least, the needle didn't break and come at me. The machine was just bought, brand new in late Sept.

Oh dear lordy!  It does sound like we quilters are a bunch of accident prone folks!  I'll join the crowd...my cat bit my right hand across my knuckles.  It swelled up, got angry so off to the Dr.'s for anti-B's.  Thank goodness I can still drive the L/A, but it has been a week...still swollen between the little and ring finger.  I'm going to a different doc tomorrow for my annual...wonder what gyno's know about infected cat bites?  LOL!

Get better everyone!

;) Many thanks for all the well wishes - freezing is now completely gone and it sure is smarting!  Have a finger splint on to make sure the sutures have a chance to let the skin start to close.  Doc said it best to immobilize it for a we bit being the cut is right where the finger bends and will have a tendency to want to open.

I'll keep checking each day after my shower and bandage changing.

Sandpat: you must have your Doctor make sure you haven't gotten any bacterial infection from the cat's mouth.  Read a news stories about folks who have lost limbs due to bites/scratches from their pets so much caution should be taken to make sure you are safe from: http://www.wagsandwhiskers.com/component/content/article?id=194:capnocytophaga-canimorsus-sometimes-the-bark-is-way-worse-than-the-bite-

P.S. please excuse my typos - I'm not a good one-finger typist and an even worse one-handed one :(

Thanks all...I'm having another Dr. look at it tomorrow.  I'll stay on top of it, its my right hand and don't want to take chances.

Well, today a trip to Reno for my follow up visit.  Thankfully, the weather wasn't snowing.  Anyway, they took the stitches out, I have a tank of a boot, but still NO WEIGHT BEARING for 4 more weeks.  She gave me a "prescription" for PT, 3 times a week, which will start Wednesday.  I'm sure looking forward to being able to at least put weight on this leg.  By the way, I have a plate and 9 screws in my right foot now.  I knew I had the pins but not how many, but apparently, I did a "good" job of breaking it.  LOL

pocoellie, I am so sorry for your injuries, it sounds so painful and you got so much damage from one fall. Hope your recovery time is as little as predicted, for all that damage.  I hope the pain is not so very bad , but it sounds very painful.  Prayers for a quick recovery.
