Love Blueberries!  Tired growing them here, but being in the woods, it is hard to grow anything anymore. We just don't get enough sunlight through.

I grow a variety called Top Hat, in big patio pots. I've had these for 5 years now. Anyone can grow them this way, as long as you remember to water them when needed.

As I said, they are in big POTS. I am in control of the soil. ANYONE can grow them in pots. Now and then, you dump some used coffee grounds in to keep out critters and keep the soil more acid.

I've picked a couple of quarts already.  Just 2 bushes bearing right now, but there will be plenty for me to eat, freeze and even share with the birds.  Love them!

Looks delicious and sounds interesting. I might try some in big pots on the deck so the critters don't get them.  Not certain if the growing season is long enough, but it's worth a try. Thanks!

When Dh found out blueberries were good for my diabetes, he planted some for me. The first year we didn't get any. The birds ate them all. So, he built the blueberry house.  We have since expanded it, and lost some of the bushes, but it works to keep out the birds!

Mommymom  dh and I did the same thing. But we discovered  it was our dog eating  the berries off the bushes low down and  birds up  high. Lol.

Squirrelfood  do you use the same variety  of berries  for  container growing? My yard planted  berries are about 8-10 feet high. Or does the container  prevent them getting high? How big is your   container?

I have a variety called Top Hat, sometimes called "patio blueberries". They don't get as big, but they bear REALLY heavy. I use the big patio pots. Maybe 18 inches across and about the same deep.

Our bushes were loaded this year ... then came the heat and no rain day after day.  Now I have shriveled-up berries on the earlier producing bushes and I don't hold out much hope for the ones that ripen a bit later.  We had a bit of rain yesterday, but need a lot more.  I've been watering our small veg. garden each day, but nothing else.

I love blueberries! Good for you and taste great. My brother has a u-pick blueberry farm, but it is out of commission this season because of mummyberry, which is a fungal disease. He had to cut all the bushes to the ground. Very sad.

I am watering mine but hope for a storm tomorrow and rain.  My bushes are running me out of freezer space!  I've put up either 7 or 8 quarts already and I should be out picking right now.  I'm thinking I'll try to make a pie.  I've never made a blueberry pie before.

An easy pie to make, really. Mix a half cup of sugar with a half cup of flour and toss the moist blueberries with it (enough to really fill a pie shell). Gently shake off some of the residue, fill the shell, dot with a couple tablespoons of butter, and cover with crust or lattice. Bake at 375 til the crust is golden.

I'm impatiently waiting on ours here.  Hoping that we get our share before the bear gets them.  GRRRR  We usually get so many that my neighbors get gallon bags chocked full, just to spread out the wealth.  LOL

Ours aren't bushes really anymore they're anywhere from 4-7' tall.  We have one that's freakin' huge and takes forever to pick.

I'm finally getting some to eat ... really not enough to freeze any.  Today's vigorous rainfall is too late to do the blueberry crop much good.  I have to prune them late fall or early winter and I watched "how to prune blueberries" on U Tube.  Good thing I watched the videos ... I didn't have a proper clue as to how to best prune them.  Lots of things have not gotten done that should have been done since DH became unable to do anything; between his absence outdoors and our having to care for him, many things have fallen by the wayside over the past 5 years or more, one of which was pruning the blueberry bushes.  They tell me (on the videos) proper pruning will increase the size of the berries.  This year's berries are pretty small, but our early crop years gave us lots of huge ones.

Your soil may be acidic. The soil where I live is alkaline. I couldn't grow blueberries if I wanted to without a lot of amendments. I am too lazy.

I'm with you Glassquilt, I do think something is wrong with our soil...and I'm getting too old to care!  Last year my Husband but in a few different vine type plants, cucumbers, squash, etc.  He prepared little circles around the pond area where there is sun light, and even remembered to not mow over them, although I almost did once. And a few tomateos...we got zip!  As far as pots, I know a lot of people do that now, but I'm not good with anything potted.  I am low maintenance when it comes to anything outside (I have better things to do, like quilt)!  The only thing I have ever been good at growing over the years is House Ivy....if it starts looking droopy, I know it needs water...as I forget!  We have a great pick your own Blueberry farm about 6 miles from us.  Hey, I think I'll take my Daughter blueberry picking while she is up here come the end of this week! LOL

Well, who knew!  I didn't even know you were supposed to trim blueberry bushes!  Mine are about 4' or so tall and 2 of them take forever to pick also.  Ugh...as if we don't have something else to do inside in the A/C! LOL.  I love the berries though!

Squirrel...thanks for the how to on the pie!  I'll try that as soon as my birthday cake is gone.
